7/13 Knowing the Real Jesus is important for Christian Foundations

Slowly, the slave begins to see the possibilities of other realities in this walk with the Lord.  As the Holy Spirit brings this reality, new hope is born, new directions seem possible!

As we deal with self destructive belief systems and destructive behaviours, we gain new freedom in Christ Jesus.  We take on a new way of seeing ourselves and of the One we have chosen to follow.

Although through this process I have legally become a ‘son’ of God, it does not mean I am mature.  There is still a process of growth beyond having eternal life.  In fact we can know the Lord Jesus Christ just like His name suggests.

These three ‘functions’ or roles contained in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ can help us focus on how we see Him.  We can relate to Him on three different levels.

1.  The Christ – predicted down through the ages

Some 48 predictions (all fulfilled) about the “Christ” (the ‘anointed one’ or Messiah, in Hebrew), can be found throughout the Old Testament.  This Christ was to be a special Man, God’s answer to human suffering and sin, a Saviour to set all men free.

The Christ (or Messiah) was a Special Man sent by God to break the power of sin over mankind.  He was to be God’s Answer to human suffering and sin, a Saviour to set all men free.  When we are “born again” we have accepted the work of the Cross and have accepted Jesus as the Christ.  We then have eternal life, because we have been adopted by Father God, and so start living eternally in relationship with Him.

When we are “born again” we have accepted the work of the Cross and have accepted Jesus as the Christ.  We then have eternal life with Him, because Father God has adopted us into His family

2. The Person, Jesus – walking with the real and living person.

The Jesus part of His title refers to His personal name, given to Him through His parents, by God.  Jesus (Joshua in Hebrew) means “He who saves”.  The person Jesus is a “friend closer than a brother…”, someone to walk and talk with through the hard times.  He can be our Friend, Confidant and ‘the One closer than a brother’.

This is where the life and joy of being a Christian is found.

3. The third part of His name refers to His position in our life: The Lord – the exalted position Jesus holds now

The people of Jesus’ time understood the concept of “Lord” as they had many ‘lords’ who ruled over them.  It was a common title, applied to those with power or wealth above the ‘common people’.  They were also familiar with the Lord God of the Old Testament, who called them to a life of obedience.

Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and some day, He will return that way.  For our earth-time, He is ‘allowing us to allow Him’ to be Lord.  We relate to Jesus as Lord when we submit to Him and allow Him access to every part of our lives.  He calls us to a life of obedience, the “death to self”.

We relate to Jesus as Lord when we submit to Him and allow Him access to every part of our lives.  When we are obedient to God about every aspect of our lives, then we obtain the victory over our problems in the here and now.  God then declares us to be overcomers (Rev. 2+3).

One of the most important issues of Lordship is, who controls your life?

By being obedient to God about every aspect of our lives, we obtain the victory over our problems in the here and now.  God then declares us to be overcomers.  (Revelation 2-3)  The vast majority of us seem to struggle to understand and practice this Lordship of Jesus.

The Lordship of Jesus is where most Christians struggle.  It’s great to have Him as Friend even when we accept Him as the Christ … but Lord of our life?  That takes some real commitment!

The real life and victory Jesus promised is found when we have His balance in all three aspects of His title.  Ultimately God wants us to enter into a personal relationship with Him – not just a religious, legal one.

Whether we talk to Jesus, Father God or the Holy Spirit, relationship is of utmost importance to Him.  When I have quiet time prayer and enter into communion with God, then I can experience the joy of being in God’s presence and fellowshipping with Him.
