4/10 How do we talk to a New Age Person about Jesus Christ and the Bible?

So far in our posts on the Challenges to the Foundations of the Christian faith, we have covered the topics of Evolution and the Biblical perspective.  Then we went onto the Challenge of Humanism and the New Age to the basic teachings of Jesus Christ.

Some people are hesitant to get into the Good News of the Gospel as they don’t feel they know enough about the Bible or their Christian view.  However, there is a hungry world out there – hungry for the reallity of a spiritual existance and the real truth of the Creator.

A.  HOW DO YOU TALK TO A NEW AGE PERSON ABOUT GOD?

1. First, love is the language of all effective evangelism, New Agers included.

We set out not to win arguments but to win others to Truth.

2. Prayer is crucial, as this is an area of spiritual warfare.

It is not the people that are evil but the power source behind their deception. Remember, “We wrestle not against flesh and blood …”, Ephesians 6:12.

Avoid judgement, condemnation and personal hatred of New Age. Learn to forgive and release everyone – even the demonic world that feeds the deception.

3. Know the Bible better than New Age people do.

Understand the major themes of God and His view of mankind. Let the Lord Jesus work in your own life so that you have a real testimony of the power of the living God. Most New Agers selectively quote the Bible, as to what they believe, and what they don’t accept.

4. Learn to talk their language by really knowing the terms they use and how the Bible compares.

The New Ager might say: “I also experience God”: which means what? Their God is not the God of the Bible, a person and One that can be touched by our weaknesses.  They may have an experience with one they call god but only Jesus came to reveal the Father.

B.  OTHER VALUABLE COMMENTS

Selwyn Stevens adds: “However well intentioned the term ‘New Age’, it is misleading. I have yet to find any practice or belief described as New Age that is not a revival of some ancient religious or spiritistic practice. The irony is that this ancient occultism is now relabelled as ‘new truth’ “.

“The New Age, the Old Lie in a New Package.”, page 7-8.

Tommy Tenney puts it well in his book, The God Chasers, page 2:

“You can’t tell me they’re not hungry for God when they wear crystals around their necks, lay down hundreds of dollars a day to listen to gurus and call psychics to the tune of billions of dollars per year. They’re hungry to hear from something that’s beyond themselves, something they are not hearing in the church of today.

The bottom line is that people are sick of church because the Church has been somewhat less than what the Book advertised! People want to connect with a higher power! Their hunger drives them to everywhere but the Church. They search in pursuits of the flesh to try to feed the hunger that gnaws at their souls.”

The hunger for the supernatural is drawing vast numbers of people into the New Age web. Besides the clear deception of such beliefs, involvement with the New Age brings an exposure to the spiritual realm, outside the protection and will of Father God. Dabbling in the kingdom of darkness will bring drastic results on a person’s life (Lev. 20:27, Deut. 18:11).

This is a time for rejoicing and reaping; for the Harvest is waiting. We must learn to deal with our own heart issues and be obedient to His calling. Next week, we will look at the next challenge to our Faith: Cults and other Religions.
